Details in reports of the flag varied.  Some mentioned only a red flag and others a red and black flag.  Some quoted the exact gold words ’emblazoned’ on the red and black flag.  One mentioned crepe. 

Some papers emphasized an ungrateful rebellion of immigrants quashed.  Others put emphasis on the grievances of the workers and reasons for rebellion.  And still others were simply brief retellings of the facts that had reached them.

A reader could have predicted the slant of articles based solely on who the publisher was.  In short, the type of media has changed, but a lot hasn’t.  Without careful crosschecks, fact checks, and search for outside verification it was and is easy to only hear what we are already used to hearing.
