As Mary Glass points out, carved stone markers for children were less common and neither George nor Clarence’s graves have markers. George’s sister, Roxie Cooper Gillespie, who was a toddler when George died, didn’t even know she had a brother named George. The marker in the first panel is an artistic choice to foreshadow and explain Tom’s memory. And here I went spoiling that with a historical note. Well, I do have some of my mother in me after all.
*Mary’s side of the family still maintains a graveyard in Webster County that includes some marked and many unmarked children’s graves from the era and earlier.
