Description
At the turn of the 20th century, miners worked long hours, but had Sundays off. Company towns often had multiple congregations–a company sponsored church usually with a pro obedience slant, a catholic congregation or organization (but perhaps without a full time priest), perhaps a black church, and at times a miner led independent church. That may sound like a lot of church, but adult miners on the whole were much less likely to attend than their wives and children. This print tells the stor CC Gillespie’s first week supporting himself at the age of nine and a compulsorary day of church after a long work week..
