Description
Life in the coal camps was challenging and life in tent camps during strikes even more so. While women weren’t allowed to work in the mines, some (my great great aunt included) snuck into the mines at night with fathers or husbands to pull down some extra coal to be counted in the morning. They made do with little and streched thin resources far by gardening, baking, rasing chickens and hogs and sewing. When mining camps during strikes were attacked by guards, women pulled up train tracks and took up arms to protect their families.
