Description

Miners started work early, and the dangers weren’t just at work.  Of the area around Smithers WV, John Cavalier wrote that it was “unsafe to be out in the streets after dark, because there was always the possibility of a shooting scrape and the innocent bystander might be injured.

The most talked about area in our town was the “Cut,” the railroad sidetrack leading toward Carbondale. Many men walked their “Last Mile” when they ventured into the “Cut” after dark. Daylight would find them on the tracks, pockets turned inside out and all worldly possessions, as well as life, gone.”
