Original Signed Artwork of Bullpush Hollow Out of Slavery and into the Dark #5A on 15″ x 11″ 300 lb paper
The plight of black sharecropping families after the Civil War is well known. Some former slaves managed to migrate to northern cities. Others migrated to the coalfields of West Virginia and found themselves in a situation former slave George Echols described: “I know the time when I was a slave and I feel just like we feel now.” This poster is from Bullpush Hollow #5A which begins Booker T. Washington’s account of working as a child miner under these conditions.
